Airborne Jeep Wheel Adapter

This is an original airborne steering wheel adapter for the late type wheel with the metal spokes. This particular one didn't have the holes in the ring drilled out to the correct size for the 1/4 BSF screws that are supposed to hold it together and it's been fitted with three 2BA screws and brass nuts. I wondered if the top part had been made for the early (plastic) wheel and at some time it's been mated to a late type base?? It was lent to a bloke to copy and he drilled out the holes in the ring, not happy about that........ The odd handle is a roughly cut chunk of UNF bolt that someone has wound into the Whit. threads at some time.

This is one of a batch of exact reproductions that I've recently made. There are other repro's available, but like so many repro bits they are only an approximate copy. My repro's are made in exactly the same way as the original, from exactly the same materials. The handles are 3/8 Whitworth, not 10mm and are accurate down to the same size of parting off "pip" at the inner end. The body it turned from hot rolled 3" bar and shows some surface imperfection because of this, just like the original. The ring is turned from plate, leaving the millscale on top, as the rust pattern on the original appears to show it also was. The 1/4 BSF screw head shape/size is based on the original drawings and similar screws of the same vintage. The drawings show spring washers under the screws which aren't fitted in this photo. The central boss has the undercut at the end of the thread on the inside, just like the original. Etc..............

I've made some of the rings with the holes bored for the 1/4 BSF screws and some to suit the 2 BA screws.

These photos are of the original adapter still attached to it's wheel, as it was when I first saw it. I'm 100% sure it is the real thing. You can't fake 60 years worth of rust, paint, dirt and abuse..........#:o)
